On March 13th in Sydney American photographer Amy Stein will talk about her photography project Domesticated at the Australian Centre for Photography (here)
Her show opens at the ACP March 12. Ok, first thing I think it's great that I now live in a city where I can see events likes this regularly. I am intrigued with Amy's work in Domesticated because the photos addresses peoples perceptions and attitudes toward wildlife. Amy's photos really make you think about this relationship. Some of the photos for this reason appear almost like fantasy like her photo of the boy waving a stick playfully at a curious deer or the coyote howling at the street light. People probably believe this kind of thing really happens! Looking at her images from Domesticated I will be really interested to learn how she got these photos. Are the animals stuffed or are they trained Hollywood performers? I live in a city now, but when I lived in a small town in Colorado having bears, mountain lions, deer, elk and other wildlife come into town was not an unexpected event. But it still struck me as odd to watch a bear cub in my back yard, deer eating my tulips or a coyote walking down the sidewalk. I only wished at those moments that I had a camera with me. In light of the recent tragedy at Florida SeaWorld, where we learn that yes indeed killer whales are more than just cute play things, Amy Steins photos do have an important message.
